Husband-and-wife team John and Ros Moriarty founded Balarinji in 1983, in celebration of the birth of their first child.
Working on their kitchen table, John and Ros developed a baby's doona cover with Turtle designs, seeking to marry their son's urban life with his indigenous heritage.
From this first step grew an internationally renowned design studio, Balarinji, with a unique signature of cutting edge contemporary design born of ancient inspiration. Today Balarinji is recognised as Australia's foremost source of contemporary design inspired by indigenous art and culture. Commissions from Qantas for the stunning 747 jets Wunala Dreaming and Nalanji Dreaming are two of the most highprofile applications of Balarinji design, with other commissions ranging from graphic, decorative treatments for the City of Sydney stre et banners through to the development of an 'art car' for Mitsubishi Australia.
The Studio's sophisticated and evocative colour palettes reflect both bush landscapes and urban cityscapes – from the cradle of human civilisation to the information age and beyond. Balarinji is more than just a name. Behind it lie different aspects of the Balarinji story which are at its foundation, and interwoven with the images that bear the Balarinji name. Balarinji is a unique and innovative contemporary design brand drawn from ancient inspiration.
